Less than half a day’s drive from Sydney and approximately two hour’s drive from Canberra, Dubbo, Bathurst and Wagga, beautiful Grenfell is the birthplace of Henry Lawson and steeped in history with much of its old world character maintained.

Weddin Shire’s agriculturally-based economy is comprised of many family-owned farms specialising in grain and lamb production. While agricultural activity underpins the region’s economy, there has been recent growth in heritage tourism and the professional business sectors.

Incentives for health professionals

Weddin Council offers subsidised rental for doctor’s residences and surgeries, and assistance with the purchase of equipment and relocation.

The towns of Weddin Shire are classified as MMM5 under the Department of Health’s new “Modified Monash Model” classification system that categorises areas according to both geographical remoteness and town size. The system was developed to recognise the challenges in attracting health workers to more remote and smaller communities. Medical professionals moving from major city areas to Weddin may be entitled to relocation and retention benefits from the General Practice Rural Incentives Program.

The Health Community

Residents of Weddin Shire have access to two doctors, a hospital, a chemist, physiotherapist, pathologist, speech therapist, nutritionist and a range of services supplied by an experienced and supportive community health team.

Grenfell Multi Purpose Service (MPS) provides health services across the Weddin Shire including the outlying villages of Quandialla, Koorawatha, Caragabal and Greenethorpe. There are approximately 68 staff members employed at Grenfell MPS with the full time equivalent of 44. The facility currently includes;

34 residential Aged Care beds
26 High Care beds and
8 Low Care beds (with one of these beds designated for respite care)
7 beds designated for Acute Inpatient and palliative care.

Medical services for the 34 Residents are provided by a Visiting Medical Officer who is contracted to the Health Service and visits daily. The facility is further supported by video and tele-health medical services.

At the hospital there is a single bed Emergency Department which sees approximately 200 patients per month. Pathology services are provided weekly by Pathology West, a division of South West

Sydney LHD and X-Ray is provided two days per week by staff from Cowra Health Services.

There are a variety of Allied Health and Community Health services provided at Grenfell Multi-Purpose Health Service including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, a social worker, Weddin Day Therapy and a dietitian. Community based nursing also provides District Nursing Services in the home, wound clinics, women’s health services, Child and Family Health, audiometry and health promotion programs.

Culture and Lifestyle

Grenfell and its surrounding villages has over 70 diverse clubs, sporting teams and community groups, including;

Art classes, photography, spinning and weaving, a native nursery run by volunteers, bird watching, bush walking, Men’s Shed, Dramatic Society, car clubs, CWA, Rotary, Lions, Probus, Guides, Cubs, church groups, Little Athletics, soccer, rugby union and league, netball, squash, bowls, swimming club, dancing, golf and tennis.

The Henry Lawson Festival

The Henry Lawson Festival is an annual event held on the June long weekend. Grenfell is the birthplace of Henry Lawson, one of Australia’s best loved poets and writer of short stories. 2015 was the 58th year of the festival, and it was a fantastic event.

The Grenfell Gold Fest

The Grenfell Gold Fest provides you with the opportunity to step back in time and experience the life and times of the 1860’s, when gold was first discovered in Grenfell.

Your Children

Most children begin their education in Grenfell in the community owned and operated Preschool and Long Daycare Centre. School bus services are available for children living both in and out of town.
